A Contemporary Two-Storey Terrace House in South Yarra: Exploring Textural Contrasts and Spatial Grandeur
This residence is designed to reflect a striking street presence with a combination of textural quarter cut masonry walls and operable louvres. The contrasting textures of the walls and the louvres create an impression of solidity and sophistication. The use of these materials also serves to enhance the thermal performance of the building, reducing the need for heating and cooling.
The interiors, on the other hand, exude a softer character with curved walls and stairwells that intertwine around muted oak and quartzite tones. The grandeur of the space inside belies the compact urban footprint of the home, as it offers an ambiance of spaciousness and elegance. The full height doors further exaggerate the already tall ceilings, while venetian plastered walls dramatically bounce light around the key spaces. The use of these design elements enhances the spatial grandeur of the house and creates an overall sense of luxury.
Despite the compact urban footprint of the house, the spatial planning maximizes the available space to create a grandiose ambiance. The clever use of curved walls and volume create an illusion of a larger space and enhance the flow between different areas. The design also ensures that the key living spaces receive ample natural light, which further contributes to the sense of spaciousness.
